Imaginons un monde où n'existeraient que les nombres de 1 à 12, comme sur une horloge. Cela permet une curieuse arithmétique. Après 12, on retrouve 1, 2, 3 ... Le 12 se confond avec le 0, le 13 avec le 1 ; le 14 avec le 2. On peut aussi bien dire qu'il est 13h ou 1 h de l'après midi, qu'il est 14 h ou 2 h de l'après-midi. On dira que 13 modulo 12 est égal à 1, que 14 modulo 12 est égal à 2, ou encore que 12 est congru à 0 modulo 12, que 13 est congru à 1 modulo 12, que 14 est congru avec 2 modulo 12.
Le terme « Modulo12 » est un mot qui signifie que l'on met en rang par 12. Par exemple 7h après 7h il sera 14h soit 2h et on écrira que 7+7 vaut 2 modulo 12, ou encore 8h+9h soit 17h c'est aussi 5h donc 8+9 vaudra 5 modulo 12. Plus généralement deux nombres a et b sont congrus modulo n quand leur différence (a-b) est un multiple de n. Ainsi 8 ou 15 sont congrus à 1 modulo 7 car les différences (8-1) qui vaut 7 et (15-1) qui vaut 14 soit 2 fois 7, sont des multiples de 7.
On dira aussi que 8 et 15 sont congrus entre eux modulo 7, car deux entiers a et b sont congrus modulo n si le reste de la division euclidienne de a par n est égal à celui de la division de b par n. (Ici dans la division de 8 ou 15 par 7 le reste entier est le même soit 1 dans les deux cas). Les congruences modulo 9 sont les plus utilisées par les magiciens et sont à l'origine de nombreux tours de magie numérique qui permettent de s'amuser en famille ou avec des amis.
